CHS Global Learning and the International Dimension

28 April 2016

Clare-Heather-web“Global learning is essentially ‘education for a fair and sustainable world.’ In other words, a world free of poverty where all human beings are treated with respect and dignity and where individuals, communities, businesses and countries behave and develop in a way which meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of other people and future generations.” With such an aspirational mission statement it is easy to understand why Cookstown High School wanted to engage with the Global Learning Programme.

Senior Teacher Mrs Allen, who is the Co-ordinator for International Work in the school, with the assistance of the Lead Teacher Dr Kane (Geography Department) have worked together planning and implementing actions on a whole school level to facilitate Level 1 certification for the school.  Pupils have been engaged in the programme in a variety of ways from learning about environmental sustainability through their participation in the school’s Eco-Team work to the Fairtrade 2016 “Sit down for Breakfast, stand up for Farmers” event.  Teachers have benefited from the resources and continuous professional development opportunities which the programme has offered.

The schools’ awareness that pupils today need to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and dispositions that will enable them to realise their potential and make responsible choices within our increasingly globalised and rapidly changing world, means that Mrs Allen and Dr Kane are looking forward to building upon this success in the next academic year.
