Eco Team - Aims & Initiatives

The Eco Team’s aim is to make each member of our school community more conscious of their behaviour in relation to recycling and environmental issues.

We feel we have been successful in achieving this goal and believe pupils and staff are now more environmentally aware.

So far we have introduced 7 major environmental initiatives at CookstownHigh School.

1. Reducing electricity consumption through energy saving posters which you see in every classroom in our school.

2. Waste recycling - In 2009 the Eco Team introduced the blue classroom bins where we recycle paper, aluminium cans, cartons and plastic bottles. A total of 120 blue recycling bins were acquired and distributed to every classroom and office in the school. The use of these blue bins has significantly reduced the amount of black bin waste from our school and is helping the Cookstown Council to reach its recycling target of 50% by 2020.

3. Clothes recycling - In June 2010 the Eco Team was instrumental in obtaining a clothes recycling bank for the school. This bank is situated in the front car park beside the tennis courts and is available for pupils and their families to use any time during school opening hours.

4.Conserving water with water hippos- 50 water hippos have been installed in toilet cisterns around school to reduce our water consumption.

5.Book recycling – in 2011 we held a book recycling week which raised almost £80 for our school. We may hold another one in the near future.

6. Battery recycling – in 2012 we started to recycle batteries. Battery recycling points can be found in the Chemistry and Geography departments.

7. Litter awareness – each year we take part in the nationwide Big Spring Clean campaign when Year 8 pupils’ colleted litter around our school grounds during Geography classes.
