Maths - A level & Events

A Level

A level Mathematics is a subject which will allow access to numerous career paths and job opportunities.  It is one of the most popular subjects chosen in N Ireland at A level. Many of our past A level pupils have progressed to study, for example, Dentistry, Accountancy, Teaching and Engineering.

There are two paths available to pupils entering sixth form. Pupils can choose to study Mathematics over the two years, completing 3 modules at the end of each year. For those pupils who have shown obvious ability in their GCSE performances of both Maths and Further (Additional) Maths, there is the opportunity to complete their A level in year 13 and progress then to study Further Mathematics in year 14.

Those taking the 2 year route are required to sit the C1, C2 and M1 modules at the end of year 13.  After this they study S1, C3 and C4.

We would recommend that anyone interested in an Engineering or a Mathematics Degree should take up the challenge of Further Mathematics. It does mean another six modules to study but the topics covered does make life easier in your next years of study at university.

Events

All pupils in both 9DA & 9DB have the opportunity of doing the UKMT Maths Challenge, which usually takes place in the month of April. This is a competition held in over 4,000 schools across the UK and is the biggest national Maths competition. Pupils can gain awards at Bronze, Silver or Gold level.

In October we have challenges and competitions in school to mark Maths Week Ireland.

The sixth form pupils also have the opportunity to try the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge in November.

This year we are taking a team from years 9 and 10 to compete in the UKMT Junior Team Challenge. Lets hope they are fast thinkers as well as fast on their feet !
