Junior Schools Cup Semi-Final
On Thursday the U14 team faced Methody in the semi finals of the Junior Schools Cup. This was a great achievement for the girls who had worked hard to get to this stage.
The match started evenly with chances created from both sides. Cookstown linked well up the right with Rebecca Lindsay and Corie Harkness putting the Methody defence under some pressure, whilst the Methody right hand side created problems for the Cookstown defence. Chloe Bowden and Jenny Crozier defended solidly whilst Jessica Stewart was pressurising the right midfield well. However; the first goal came when Methody broke down the right and a ball across the circle saw the left winger slot the ball in the back of the net. Cookstown rose to the challenge and within minutes the ball broke down the left, found Kerri Scott who delivered a precision pass which saw Hannah Taylor score the equalizer. Claire Spence and Kerri Scott worked tirelessly in the centre winning possession and finding passes into the circle but unfortunately Cookstown could not get the touch that was needed. Just minutes before half time Methody once again broke down the right and a 2v1 with the keeper saw them make no mistake.
After half time the Cookstown girls found themselves under pressure when an injury to Lauren Reilly saw her exit from the match, a reshuffle made Cookstown nervous initially and Methody took this opportunity to put the ball in the net to make the score 3-1. Cookstown tried in valour in the last 5minutes to grab a consellation goal with some excellent runs from Taylor on the left and Anderson on the right. Methody remained strong and the keeper kept the Cookstown shots out.
A disappointing end for a dedicated and motivated team. The girls worked tirelessly the whole way through the tournament and they should be proud to have reached the Semi Final of such a prestigious trophy.
