U15's Win Richardson Cup Final

02 April 2015

Cookstown High School U15's 4 -  Campbell College 0

In the show piece final the Cookstown High School boys were determined to improve upon their success of last year when they shared the U14 Ferris Cup.  They reached the final with a bye in the first round, followed by comprehensive victories over Wellington College, Regent House and Wallace High School, scoring 18 goals in the process and conceding only 1. Cookstown hadn't played Campbell during the normal season and the Belfast powerhouse had  beaten Banbridge Academy in their semi final, so they weren't a team to be taken lightly.

In very blustery conditions Cookstown dominated the first five minutes of the match and lead by centre forward Jack Dingley pressed the Campbell defence hard,  forcing them into turnover after turnover. This led to a number of scoring opportunities which Cookstown failed  to take until the ball fell to Cole Chambers at the edge of the circle who then unleashed a reverse stick shot low past the helpless Campbell keeper. This settled the team down and they continued to dominate possession with the midfield of Scott McCabe, Danny Kerr and Cole Chambers constantly stepping in front of their men snuffing out any chances that Campbell had of mounting any sustained pressure. Any time that Campbell progressed into Cookstown's final third, they were met with a solid wall of Callum Scott, Matthew Glendinning, Jack Haycock and Tom Black who together made sure that Joshua McCabe had a relatively quiet first half.

Cookstown continued to dominate and forced a number of short corners from the harnessed. Campbell defence. it was from the second of these that a well worked routine saw Jack Haycock smash over from  the edge of the circle to double their lead and give them a strong half time position.

The second half saw Cookstown having to play into a strong head wind  which they dealt with well by letting the ball do all the work.  Campbell attempted to emulate  Cookstown in the first half and press them in but this was negated by captain jack Haycock's aerial pass that bypassed the Campbell forwards and set up attack after attack getting the front line of Steven Arrell, Jack Dingley and Troy Chambers running at pace at the Campbell defence. It was from one of these attacks that Cookstown won a short corner which Jack Haycock scored to give the Cookstown boys a nice 3 goal cushion.  Campbell started to get into their stride after this, but Joshua McCabe dealt with everything they had to give. With ten minutes to go a through ball from midfield into the circle was perfectly met by a Steven Arrell run who made no mistake in deflecting the ball past the keeper and ensuring that the match was over as a contest and that Cookstown were the U15 champions.
