Meat mission!

LMC2-webPatricia Gallagher from the Livestock and Meat Commission made four visits to the Home Economics Department over the past month. She has given cookery demonstrations to three year 11 GCSE Home Economics classes, as well as one to Year 8-12 pupils from the Learning Support Unit.

She talked to pupils about some of her work and skills based on the NI Farm Quality Assured beef and lamb scheme.

Patricia demonstrated how to make a Hoi Beef Stir-fry and pupils were lucky enough to sample this tasty dish afterwards. ..mmm!

LMC9-webThe dish used a lot of fresh vegetables, so this fitted in well with the Eatwell plate topic pupils had been learning about in unit 1 of GCSE Home Economics, as well as following one of the eight tips for eating well… “Eat lots of fruit and vegetables”. Cookstown High School was very fortunate to avail of these demonstrations as a limited number are available each year and the LMC have more demonstration requests than they can fund each year.

Pupils were also given free pamphlets and recipes based on NI Farm Quality Assured beef and lamb. They left the lesson having learnt a lot more about the traceability of meat labelled with the logo and are now able to recognise this on different products. Pupils were advised that buying products with this symbol would support our local farmers and economy, reassure us that the products are safe to eat and also help the environment by reducing food miles. Patricia was also very kind and helpful and was more than happy to answer any of their questions.
