CHS compete in AILO "The Problem Solvers’ Challenge”

02 April 2015

ailo2-webThe All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) challenges secondary school students to test their minds against the world’s toughest problems in logic, language and linguistics. Students must develop their own strategies for solving complex problems in unfamiliar languages (including this year Danish, Greek and Japanese) – making AILO a fabulous way to hone problem-solving and lateral thinking skills!

Round 1 of the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) took place on Monday 2nd February 2015 in school.  The first round was an individual paper that took 2 hours in exam conditions.  This year there was a lot of interest in the competition and 26 pupils from junior and senior school participated in the first round.   The AILO this year had in total 1,267 students participating, a massive (68%) increase on last year, with only the top 100 students invited to attend a second round.

We were very proud to have three qualifying pupils for Round 2, this was a first for the school.  Jake Ferguson (Yr12), Vincent Wong (Yr11) and Alice Li (Yr 10) all made the qualifying mark and were invited to Dublin City University on Tuesday 24th March.  Although the results are not yet available, the school was very proud of the pupils who made it through as the top 100 problem solvers in Ireland!  The four eventual winners, from the Round 2 individual 2 hour paper, will represent Ireland in the World Event in Bulgaria in July and will sit a 6 hour paper to test their logic and problem solving skills to the limit.

Speaking of the event, Senior Teacher Mrs Claire Allen said, “At Cookstown High School we believe in providing opportunity and promoting excellence as we strive to bring out the best in every pupil.  That means providing challenging and stimulating activities for the most able.   We are delighted that our pupils have done so well and I want to congratulate everyone who volunteered to take part in this rigorous competition”.
