Positive Inspection of Shared Education with Holy Trinity College

22 November 2016

IMG 0444 1On Wednesday November 16th 2016 staff and pupils involved in the Shared Education Partnership of Holy Trinity College and Cookstown High School welcomed Dr Mark Barr from the ETI. Dr Barr was extremely positive about his one day visit during which he met with Year 8 finalists from the schools’ Public Speaking Competition held in Term 3 in the Burnavon and Year 12 pupils who had participated in joint revision classes and a number of social activities.  The aim of the shared education initiative is to raise academic standards and allow pupils to come together to forge relationships and build a more united community in Cookstown.

Dr Barr acknowledged the clear vision for shared education, effective use of resources and challenging pupil centered targets aimed at improving the quality of the learners’ experience.  He praised the involvement of staff at all levels and in a range of subject areas and stated that pupils were clearly engaged in shared education experiences.

Now in its second year, Shared Education has provided a wealth of opportunities for staff development including staff training in mentoring pupils and Literacy workshops.  Pupils have had opportunities to meet with pupils from Holy Trinity College and, in addition to learning new skills, have formed friendships.

Both schools look forward to another very busy and exciting year working together to extend the number of Year 8 pupils who will develop self- esteem, confidence and oracy skills by taking part in what has now become the annual Year 8 Public Speaking competition while Year 12 pupils will renew their friendships and complete further workshops and revision clinics in the run up to English exams.

The number of staff and pupils involved in Shared Education looks set to mushroom with the Careers departments from both schools  currently working on a joint Interview Skills Day for Years 12 and 14 planned for January and March 2017.  Dr Barr’s visit to what he described as ‘an effective and productive partnership’ between the two schools which has ‘tremendous’ potential has certainly affirmed  Cookstown High School’s passion for, and commitment to, Shared Education.
