NI Plate and League Success

24 February 2015

Congratulations go to Cookstown High School’s Intermediate, Junior and Minor Netball Squads who have had great success in the NI League and Plate competitions.

The Intermediates and minors took part in the SELB League Finals on Thursday 22nd January 2015. The Intermediate squad faced Sacred Heart Newry in their final. Cookstown were always going to have a big challenge on their hands playing against a very experienced side. Despite a valiant effort, Cookstown were beaten to the gold medals losing out to Sacred Heart 24 – 12. Despite this, Cookstown still returned home with  SELB silver medals in their possession.

The Minor Squad faced St Paul’s Bessbrook in their final. Cookstown had previously been beaten by this team in earlier stages of this competition. This made them more determined to win. Cookstown stepped up their game and dominated the first quarter. They worked tirelessly throughout the match to win 10 goals to 8 in a very tight contest winning the SELB Trophy and the gold medals. The Minors now face Lumen Christi in the Semi Final of the Northern Ireland league.

The Intermediates achieved even greater success in the Northern Ireland Plate. The squad was unfortunate to meet very strong opposition in the first round of the cup, namely cupholders Our Lady of St Patricks College Knock. This saw the Intermediates knocked out into the plate where they met some tough opposition against some great netball schools but they have successfully won all their matches and have reached the NI finals. The intermediates will take on Friends School Lisburn on Wednesday 25th March 2015 in Lisburn Racquets Club.

The Juniors also faced strong opposition in the plate and after some great games, they eventually defeated Lurgan Junior High School in the semi-final of the NI Plate winning 22 -11 to reach the finals. The Juniors will take on Wallace High School in the final on Tuesday 24th March in Lisburn Racquets Club.

The Minors are in the NI Shield and faced Lismore Comprehensive school. After a very tough and exciting match, the teams score were drawn despite going to extra time. The girls will now face a replay before the 6th March. Hopefully the girls can achieve success in this competition and reach the semi-finals.

Well done to all the teams and good luck for finals day.
