Ski Trip 2015

15 April 2015

09862-webOn 7th February 2015, 24 pupils, Mr Boardman and Mrs Ferguson travelled to Marilleva in the Italian Dolomites for a week of skiing. With brilliant weather and perfect skiing conditions, the week was a fantastic experience for all involved!

We set out from Belfast on a plane named Fearghal, and arrived into Verona airport at about 7pm. From there we had a two hour journey on a coach up the Dolomite Mountains. This journey was in darkness so it was only as we made the return journey on our way home that we discovered we had been travelling up steep slopes with sheer drops and multiple hairpin bends!

Our hotel was a ski-in ski-out resort, which meant we stepped straight out of the hotel and onto the slopes, without having to walk with our skis and poles. There were two other schools from Northern Ireland staying at the same hotel; Clounagh Junior High, Portadown and St. Michaels, Lurgan. Each day we had two skiing sessions with an instructor which lasted two hours each. Our group was split into beginners and an advanced group who had been skiing before. Those in the beginner group had Alex P., Matieu, or Danilo as their instructor while the advanced group had Maximo.

DSCN4123-webBy the end of the week the blue slopes were a breeze to everyone and we were fairly confident on the red slopes. On our last couple of days we spent most of our time off-piste (the bumpy areas between slopes) where we had the added excitement of dodging trees, though in a few cases it seemed like we were aiming for them! There were no major injuries but I think almost everyone fell at least once or twice… a day…!

With the soft snow to cushion our landings, most of the falls were just an amusing addition to the already amusing sessions! The instructors were fantastic and were always cracking jokes, but a few members of our group provided their own entertainment! Without naming names *cough* Cornel *cough*, there were a few people who managed to take everyone else down with them every time they fell,  others who managed to ski through the instructor’s legs (I’m looking at you Annie) and John did manage to get stuck up a mountain for approximately half an hour. We also had four-people pile ups and TJ skiing down a 2km slope with only one ski attached!

We had a range of other activities throughout the week, including night skiing, a slalom race and tobogganing! The tobogganing especially provided even more pile ups, and SOMEONE managed to almost toboggan down a black slope and end up headfirst in a fence. Cornel! We also went out for pizza one night, squeezed all 26 of us in one three person room for an impromptu gathering, and all squashed onto the hotel balcony to watch a skiing show put on by the ski instructors. While we were away it was TJ’s birthday so we also had a birthday party complete with cake one evening!

DSCN4246-webWe ended the trip with a day in Verona, where we visited Juliet’s balcony, the Roman amphitheatre and McDonalds before heading to the airport for our flight home! Everyone was very tired by the end of the trip (and admittedly rather sick of pasta!) but we all loved every minute and would go back in a heartbeat!
