Mock EU Council Debate 2019

4th Mar 2019

On the 7th of February 2019 Kristyn, Emily and Ava travelled to Belfast City Hall with Mrs C. Allen to participate in the Mock EU Council debate.

The three girls competed as representatives of Germany amongst 28 other EU countries. Ava spoke in the first debate on climate change in the EU and Kristyn spoke on the growing EU crisis (both from the German prospective). Emily attended both debates, researching and giving vital information to both spokespersons. Each team entered the chamber for an hour debate on their topics.  The event lasted from 9.15am until around 2.30 so we were fortunate enough to attend a lunch hosted in a very grand hall with the other team members…it was delicious!

To conclude, a very well organised event by the British Council which gave all 29 teams an insight into the dilemmas, tangents and procrastinations of an EU council debate!  With the UK’s impending EU exit, it would be sad to think that this could not continue to operate in some form as it provides a very valuable opportunity to look at the policies and priorities of our European neighbours.  As a team, we would very much look forward to competing again!
